I just finished a conversation with an artist who was interested in licensing his work.
His art is good…
But we already represent several artists with excellent art, and maybe 25% of them have not been productive for us.
Seems that their art is not suited for licensing, except maybe for prints – and there is too much good art chasing too few opportunities in the print market.
Questions for the artist:
- are you aware of market trends in terms of popular and forecasted colors?
- are you aware of market trends in terms of subject-matter?
- are you aware of market trends in terms of products that rely heavily on licensed art?
- do you look at products (when shopping, for example) and think, “my art could work there”?
- do you search the internet to keep abreast of current trends?
